DNATraits agrees with the Statement on Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing set forth by the American College of Medical Genetics.*
It also endorses the following statement by Bruce Korf, MD, PhD, as published in the press-release issued by the ACMG on September 25, 2007: "It is critical that individuals ask for a referral to a genetic expert who can help in determining what tests might be advisable and in interpreting results."*
In accordance with this recommendation, DNATraits offers consultation with our genetic counselors at no charge both before and after testing. All clients and prospective clients have the right to speak with a genetic counselor prior to testing (optional), after testing (required), or both.
Speaking with a genetic counselor prior to testing does not obligate you to order a test, as genetic testing may not be right for you. DNATraits does not share your results with anyone except with you and the genetic counselor you will speak with on our staff, nor do we accept reimbursement from insurance companies.
A medical doctor (MD) will review all positive results as an extra quality control measure before results are reported to the genetic counselor and client.
If you have questions about what tests to order or what your results mean, contact a DNATraits genetic counselor today.
