DNATraits provides direct-to-consumer genetic data from tests conducted on individual DNA samples. DNATraits offers tests that are broader in scope and less expensive than any in the world, complete with a free consultation with our genetic counselors before testing (optional) and a free consultation after testing (required) to discuss your results.

By testing for the mutations that are known to cause genetic disorders or are associated with a particular trait, you can make informed decisions about yourself and your future family. However, in the event that your results are positive for any of the mutations tested, we strongly recommend that you see your doctor for his evaluation of the results and any course of action.

The test results are yours to keep, use, or share as you wish. DNATraits stores your sample for future testing requests, but only you can request a new test on your sample.*

How the Testing Process Works

  1. Choosing A Test. If you have a test in mind, or want to inform yourself about the tests we offer, you may browse through a complete list of the Panels and Tests available from DNATraits here. If you are not sure which test or combination of tests is most appropriate, you may consult with our genetic counselor free of charge and at no future obligation.
  2. Place an Order. Once you have determined what to test, place your order with DNATraits online. Once your order is placed, DNATraits will email a confirmation that includes your order summary. The next business day, DNATraits will mail your sample collection kit, which contains a sanitary vial and instructions for collecting your saliva sample. A self-addressed envelope for the return of your sample will also be included.
  3. Sample Collection. Sample collection is simple and does not require you to leave your home or visit a lab. To collect the sample, spit your saliva into the sanitary vial until the amount of saliva reaches the level shown in the image in the kit instructions. Cap the container, tighten, and shake gently. For best results, refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum 30 minutes prior to giving the sample. Before collecting the sample, you may rinse your mouth with water then wait at least 30 seconds before collection.
  4. Sample Return. Once the sample is collected, mail it back in the self-addressed envelope provided to: DNATraits, 1445 North Loop West #820, Houston, TX 77008. DNATraits will send you another email to confirm receipt of your sample and provide you with login information that allows you to track your sample online.
  5. Processing. Once the lab receives your sample, the DNA from your saliva is extracted. Next, technicians test your DNA to identify the presence or absence of mutations for the test(s) you requested. Finally, the lab produces a readout and an interpretation to determine whether your sample produced a positive or a negative result to the test(s).
  6. DNATraits Review. When the lab testing is complete, the readouts of tests are sent to the DNATraits qualified team for review and confirmation. This extra step of quality control helps to ensure that our customers receive the most accurate results possible.
  7. Your Results and Free Consultation. After our genetic counselor at DNATraits has reviewed your results you are notified (by email) that the results are ready. You will receive instructions on setting up a telephone appointment with our genetic counselor, who will review the results with you and answer any questions you may have. Once your consultation is complete, DNATraits provides you with direct access to all your test results, which you may view online at any time.

*Currently, our services are not available in the States of California and New York, as NYS and CA require their own certification. DNATraits is in the process of obtaining that certification.
